When it comes to the most popular dessert of America, we know its chocolate chip cookies. They are the saviors of those late nights when your friends drop by, when there is an emergency spot open at the cookie baking annual session or any other cookie occasion. Whatever is baked, it always has the word chocolate chip and cookie in it.

Have you ever pondered what President John F. Kennedy and chocolate chip cookies have in common? Possibly not! Therefore, we have combined some historical tidbits regarding chocolate chip cookies.

  •         These popular cookies have approximate 2,000 varieties that range from white chocolate chip berry to chocolate chip banana.
  •         The most popular amongst these 2,000 is the recipe known as “Toll House cookie”, which is seen at the back of all chocolate chip packages by Nestle.

The Toll House Inn
Near Boston, Massachusetts, in 1930, Kenneth Wakefield and his wife Ruth Wakefield opened Toll House Inn. The tourist lodge was opened in a building (around 1709) where, years before, travelers paid their taxes, enjoyed homemade meals and changed horses.
  •          By 1930, this Toll House Inn became popular due to Ruth’s cooking and her main specialty was deserts.
  •          When travelers came by for a stay, she would bid them farewell with a platter of delicious cookies.
  •          In 1937, on one uneventful day, Ruth made her cookies in a different a manner. She broke a Yellow Label Semisweet Chocolate bar of Nestlé in to small chunks and added them to her recipe of butter cookie dough.

Results? . . . Instant success!

Rumor or truth has it that after her success, Nestlé gave her a chocolate supply for lifetime in exchange for sharing her recipe and giving them the rights to print the recipe at the back of their chocolate bar packages. This recipe became so popular that eventually Nestlé started marketing chocolate chips, which were specifically made for cookies. Later, they even started selling instant chocolate chip cookie batter.

With the advancing years, Toll House Inn was graced by the presence of numerous well-known guests, which also included – guess who? The President of US, John F. Kennedy.
Since Ruth added chocolate chips to her cookies, all bags of chocolate chips by Nestlé in North America have continued to be printed by Wakefield’s original, the Toll House recipe on the back.
According to Ruth’s recipe of the chocolate chip cookies, all cookies are made the same way. Every recipe is as follows:
  •         Sugar
  •          Flour
  •          Margarine or butter
  •          Baking powder or baking soda
  •          Chocolate chips
  •          Vanilla
  •          Eggs

The texture and taste varies in every recipe. Some cookies come out flat while some come out puffy. The ones, which are easy to decorate, are the flat.
Do you want the chocolate chip cookies to be decorated? Every kid loves a cutely decorated cookie especially for his or her school party. You might want to try it sometime if you are not worn-out from your night baking session. Since every mom wants their kids to have chocolate chip cookie nutrition, they all let their kids have as many as they want and when you put a little decoration on it, it is as if you are the best mom in your kid’s eyes.

Single – Large Chocolate Chip Cookie
Also known as, ‘chocolate chip pan cookie’, this type of cookie comes as a lifesaver. When at night you suddenly realize that you forgot to bake cookies for you son or daughter’s “National Play Day”, you can use the chocolate chip pan technique to make it immediately.
Make a large cookie like the size of a cake and pipe on royal icing filled with gel and write on a message such as “Happy Imagining”.

Bouquets of Chocolate Chip Cookies
Mostly white chocolate chips are used on cookies to give a more polished and fancy look. They make the cookies look very cheerful and cute like for your cousin Bob who graduated from swimming classes or your 75-year old Aunt Suzy who married her gym instructor.
Here is an idea:

Milk and Cookies Bouquet Recipe
  •         Dough of chocolate chip cookies by Toll House – 1 bag
  •          Royal icing
  •         Lollipop sticks of varying heights (not plastic)

Method
  •          Preheat your oven to 365° F
  •         Take the cookie dough and roll it in to four two-inch balls
  •          Place the four balls on to an ungreased sheet
  •          Place the lollipop stick in each ball
  •         Insert them firmly
  •         Bake for 12 to 16 minutes
  •          Bake until the edges are crisp
  •          Cool the cookies for one minute
  •          Place them on wire rack for further cooling

Once made, now you can decide whether you want to decorate them or not. The best decoration for cookie is the royal icing, which can be found quite easily on the market. Do not put too much icing or the wholesome taste of the cookie will be lost. For a theme such as "cookies and milk", you can decorate it with milk mustaches from white icing.

After the icing becomes hard, wrap the cookies in cellophane sheet and tie each with a ribbon. You can arrange the cookies in a mug, to match your theme. You can also serve them with milk glasses as cookies and milk is a great a combination.
